The capital and largest city of the Netherlands.
As of 2019, it had a population of 862,965 and an area of 219km².
Most of the royal palaces and government agencies are located in Denhach, but Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands as defined by the Constitution of the Netherlands.
The name Amsterdam comes from the "Aemsteledam", which was built around 1275, on the Rivier de Amstel.
The Dutch word "dam" has the same etymology as it is commonly used as an English.
Therefore, Amsterdam means "a dam on the Amsterdam River".
In Dutch, it is close to "스터mstrrddmm" (Amsterdam).
The old town, surrounded by three large semicircular canals, is home to most of its tourist attractions, which were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
It is easy to think of it as a city that many tourists just pass by because it takes up to 20 minutes by foot from Amsterdam Central Station to the end of the canal district, but there are many tourist attractions everywhere.

왕궁과 정부 기관의 대부분이 덴 하흐에 위치해 있지만 네덜란드 헌법에서 규정된 네덜란드의 수도는 암스테르담이다.
1275년경 암스털강(Rivier de Amstel)에 둑을 쌓아 건설된 '암스텔레담(Aemstelredam)'에서 현재의 암스테르담이라는 지명이 유래했다.
네덜란드어의 담(Dam)은 흔히 영어식인 댐으로 쓰이는 표현과 어원이 같다.
따라서 암스테르담은 '암스털강의 댐'이라는 뜻을 지닌다.
네덜란드어 발음으로는 '[ˌɑmstərˈdɑm](암스터르담)'에 가깝다
반원형으로 이루어진 세 개의 큰 운하로 둘러싸인 구시가지에는 대부분의 관광 명소가 밀집되어 있는데 이 구역을 Grachtengordel(운하 지구)이라고 하고 2010년에 유네스코 세계 유산으로 지정되었다.
암스테르담 중앙역에서 도보로 최대 20분이면 운하 지구의 끝까지 갈 수 있기 때문에 많은 관광객들이 그냥 넘어가는 도시라고 생각하기 쉬우나 곳곳에 관광 명소가 많이 있다.
대마초와 매춘이 합법화된 국가의 수도답게 여러 곳에 그와 관련된 업소와 거리가 있다.
이 때문에 암스테르담의 시 문장인 XXX를 저러한 도시 특징과 연관시키는 사람들이 많은데 실제로는 중세 시기부터 유래해 온 유서 깊은 문장이다.
하도 욕을 얻어 먹어서 네덜란드에서도 요새는 마약을 불법화하는 쪽으로 규제가 강화되었다.
