슬로베니아의 수도로 인구는 2012년 기준 27만 명.
현지어인 슬로베니아어로 "사랑스러운(Ljublj-)"라는 뜻이라는 설이 있는데,
아직까지는 분명하게 드러난 어원이 없다.
다만 류블랴나를 통과하는 류블랴니차 강에서 따왔다는 것 하나만은 확실하고,
그 단어가 옛 슬라브어계통의 단어에서 유래했다는 것만 명확하다.
여하튼 발음하기 참 어려운 수도 이름 중 하나이다.
잘레 공동묘지와 성 미카엘 교회, 류블랴나 성과 프레셰렌 광장 등이 이 도시의 유명한 관광명소이다.
기원전 15년 경에 로마 제국이 이곳에 에모나(Emona)라는 군사기지를 건설했고,
이후 이 곳은 도시가 되었다.
그러나 5세기 훈족에 의해 파괴되었다.
이후 6세기에 슬라브인의 일파인 슬로베니아인들이 이곳에 정착했다.
이후 바이에른 공국의 지배를 받다가 신성 로마 제국이 들어선 직후 오스트리아와 함께 바이에른 공국에서 분리되었고, 1144년 류블라냐 성이 건설되었다.
이후 오랜동안 합스부르크 왕가를 거쳐 오스트리아 제국의 지배를 받았으며,
그 휘하인 크라인 공국의 수도였다.
제1차 세계대전이 끝나고 오스트리아-헝가리 제국이 붕괴되면서 유고슬라비아 왕국에 병합되었다.
제2차 세계 대전 당시 슬로베니아는 이탈리아 왕국 치하에 들어가고,
이곳에는 소규모 자치주인 류블랴나 주가 들어선다.
제2차 세계 대전후에는 유고슬라비아 사회주의 연방공화국의 슬로베니아 사회주의 공화국의 수도가 되었다가, 1991년 슬로베니아가 유고슬라비아 사회주의 연방공화국으로부터 독립 후 독립국 슬로베니아의 수도가 되었다.
파울로 코엘료의 소설, '베로니카, 죽기로 결심하다'의 첫 배경이기도 하다.

Slovenia's capital city has a population of 270,000 as of 2012.
There is a theory that it means "ljublj-" in Slovenia, the local language, but so far there is no clear etymology.
However, it is clear that the word comes from the Ljubljani 강a River, which passes through Ljubljana, and that it comes from an old Slavic language.
Anyway, it is one of the capital city names that is very difficult to pronounce.
