유럽으로 활짝 열린 창, 북유럽의 베네치아라고 불리우는
푸틴 대통령의 고향 러시아 상트페테르부르크에서 만나는 브런치입니다.
This is Brunch to meet in Saint Petersburg, Putin's hometown,
Venice in Northern Europe, a window wide open to Europe.
7월 4일이었다.
그날, 애니는 가족과 즐겁게 지내며 많은 에너지를 소모했다.
It was July 4th.
That day, Annie spent a lot of energy having fun with her family.
저녁이 되자 다들 잠자리에 들었다.
Everyone went to bed in the evening.
그런데 한밤중에 애니의 열두 살짜리 딸 마리가 엄마 침대 곁에 오더니,
In the middle of the night, Annie's 12-year-old daughter came to her mother's bed and said she couldn't breathe well because of her heartache.
가슴이 아파 숨을 잘 못 쉬겠다고 했다.
마리를 진정시킨 후, 애니는 아침까지 기다렸다가
After calming Marie down, Annie waited until the morning before taking her to a family doctor.
마리를 데리고 가정 주치의를 찾아가기로 했다.
“심각한 문제가 있는 것 같지는 않고 천식 같습니다.
"It doesn't seem like there's a serious problem, and it's like asthma.
천식용 흡입기를 처방해드리겠습니다.
I'll prescribe an asthma inhaler.
하지만 혹시 모르니 가슴 엑스레이를 찍고 가십시오.”
But just in case, take an X-ray of your chest."
엑스레이를 찍은 후, 어머니와 딸은 처방받은 흡입기를 받으러 약국에 갔다.
After X-raying, the mother and daughter went to the pharmacy to receive the prescribed inhaler.
그런데 의사가 애니를 찾는다는 전화가 왔다.
But the doctor called to find Annie.
애니와 마리는 차를 타고 곧바로 병원으로 향했다.
Annie and Marie drove straight to the hospital.
의사는 엑스레이상으로 심장 비대증이라고 했다.
The doctor X-rayed it as heart hyperplasia.
몇 시간에 걸쳐 마리는 혈액 검사를 받았고 MRI도 찍었으며 몇 가지 검사를 더 했다.
Over the course of several hours, Marie underwent blood tests, an MRI scan, and several more tests.
의사는 자신의 진단을 얘기했다.
전혀 뜻밖의 말이었다.
The doctor talked about his diagnosis.
It was a completely unexpected remark.
“검사 결과 따님은 심장 비대증입니다.
그뿐 아니라 림프종도 발견되었는데,
"Your daughter has heart hyperplasia.
림프종이 심장으로 전이된 것 같습니다.
아주 드문 경우입니다.”
In addition, lymphoma was found, and lymphoma seems to have spread to the heart.
It's a rare case."
수술은 두 차례 이뤄질 예정이었다.
The surgery was scheduled to take place twice.
심장외과의가 먼저 수술한 후 흉부외과의에게 넘겨 암 덩어리를 찾아내고 화학치료도 할 예정이었다.
A heart surgeon was scheduled to operate first, then hand it over to a chest surgeon to find lumps of cancer and provide chemotherapy.
화학치료는 수술 다음 날 하기로 했다.
The chemotherapy will be done the day after the surgery.
