작은 프랑스라는 별명으로 불리우는 캐나다 동부 퀘벡에서 만나는 브런치입니다.
It is brunch in Quebec, eastern Canada, which is nicknamed "Little France."
1970년대, 그 시절에는 동네마다 거지들이 참 많았다.
In the 1970s, there were many beggars in each neighborhood.
어느 시골 권사님이 그들을 집에 데리고 와서 먹이고, 입히고, 재웠다.
A rural deacon brought them home to feed, clothe and sleep.
권사님에게는 세 딸이 있었는데, 그중 막내딸이 초등학교 1학년 때의 일이다.
The deaconess had three daughters, the youngest daughter of whom was in the first grade of elementary school.
비가 억수같이 내리던 날, 십여 명의 거지들이 학교 정문에서 우산을 들고 막내딸을 기다리고 있었다.
On a rainy day, a dozen beggars were waiting for their youngest daughter with umbrellas at the front gate of the school.
그들이 너덜너덜한 우산 몇 개를 겹쳐 막내딸에게 건네주자 남학생들이 놀리기 시작했다.
The boys started teasing them when they handed some tattered umbrellas to their youngest daughter.
“얼레리~ 꼴레리~ 너희 집은 거지집이래~ 거지집이래~.”
"Early~ Coley~ Your house is a beggar's house. It's a beggar's house.”
막내딸은 너무나 창피해서 우산을 땅에 내팽겨치고 집으로 달려갔다.
The youngest daughter was so embarrassed that she threw her umbrella to the ground and ran home.
그러나 집에서 기다리는 것은 밥상에 둘러 앉아 있는 거지들과 꽁보리밥에 열무김치뿐이었다.
But waiting at home was only beggars sitting around the table, kkangbori bap and radish kimchi.
막내딸은 물에 밥을 말아서 급히 먹고는 방문을 ‘쾅’ 닫고 들어 가버렸다.
The youngest daughter poured rice into the water, ate it quickly, and slammed the door shut.
막내딸은 동네에서 놀다가 땅에 엎드려 있는 거지를 보면 발로 밀어서 얼굴을 확인하고는 이렇게 중얼거렸다.
When the youngest daughter saw a beggar lying on the ground while playing in the neighborhood, she pushed him with her feet to check his face and muttered like this.
“오늘 이 거지는 또 내 방에 있을 거야.”
"Today, this beggar will be in my room again.”
해가 져서 집에 돌아가면 영락없이 낮에 봤던 그 거지가 막내딸의 방에 있었다.
When the sun set and went home, the beggar that I saw during the day was in my youngest daughter's room.
그뿐만이 아니었다.
It wasn't just that.
권사님은 옆 동네 고아원의 아이들을 서너 명씩 집으로 데리고 와서 먹이고, 입히고,
The deaconess brought three or four children from the orphanage next door to her house, fed, dressed, and put on some weight, and took them back to the orphanage and brought other children.
살이 조금 오르면 다시 고아원에 데려다주고 또 다른 아이들을 데리고 왔다.
그렇게 집에는 늘 거지들과 고아들이 있었다.
So there were always beggars and orphans in the house.
딸들은 마음 깊이 어머니를 존경했지만 어머니와 같은 삶을 살고 싶진 않았다.
The daughters admired their mother deeply, but did not want to live the same life as their mother.
그래서 집에서 하루 속히 벗어나는 길을 모색했다.
그것은 빨리 결혼하는 것이었다.
So I searched for a way out of the house quickly.
It was to get married quickly.
딸들이 결혼할 때 권사님이 축복을 해주었다.
The deaconess blessed my daughters when they got married.
권사님의 축복은 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱의 축복이었다.
Blessed were Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
성경에 나오는 모든 축복을 딸들에게 했다.
그리고 마지막으로 이렇게 기도했다.
She gave all the blessings in the Bible to her daughters.
And lastly, she prayed like this.
“아버지!
우리 딸들이 거부, 성부 되기를 원합니다.
"Father! My daughters want to be rejected, Fathers.
딸들이 재물로써 잃어버린 영혼을 구원하게 하시고,
하나님 나라를 세우는데 이들을 사용하시옵소서.
Let your daughters save their lost souls as wealth and use them to build a kingdom of God.
딸들이 시집가서 머무는 곳의 1km 안에 고아와 과부와 객들이 굶는다면
이 모든 죄가 딸들의 머리로 돌아갈지어다!
If orphans, widows and guests starve within a kilometer of where they marry and stay, all these sins will return to their heads!
예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다.“
In Jesus' name we pray.“
이 기도는 딸들에게 축복이 아니라 저주처럼 느껴졌다.
This prayer felt like a curse, not a blessing, to daughters.
